Dear Parents and students,
Reading is an important life-long skill and doesn’t stop with the end of the school year. Like anything worth doing, it requires continued practice. Reading for pleasure through the summer instills in our children the idea that reading is a pleasurable life skill.
To support summer reading, the Lebanon Public Schools and the Jonathan Trumbull Public Library have compiled lists of summer reading choices, including this year’s Connecticut Nutmeg Award Nominees, for all middle school students. Over the summer, students are asked to read at least two books. Children are not required to read any of the suggested titles, with the exception of fifth graders, who must read at least one book from their grade-level list. The intention of these lists is to assist you with a starting point in the selection of reading material for your child. Please participate in the book selection process with your child to ensure that the book’s theme, reading level, and content are age appropriate and respect your family’s values and interests.
Attached to each list is a Summer Reading reporting form (Click HERE). Students should keep a tally of their reading throughout the summer. These forms will be returned to the Reading/Language Arts teachers at the beginning of the school year. Grade 8 students are asked to also complete ONE book report sheet for ONE of the TWO books read. Students will be required to complete a project sharing their favorite summer reading choice. In addition, students’ reading information will be tallied and compiled in a report for the Connecticut State Board of Education. All students who submit a properly completed form will receive recognition for the summer’s accomplishments and students who have read at least 15 books will be invited to a special reading celebration.
We thank you for your support of our summer reading program. We hope that reading throughout the summer will broaden students’ knowledge, sharpen their skills, and allow them to experience the pleasure of getting lost in a good book.
Sincerely,
Lebanon Middle School Faculty and Staff
